Venezuela Coast at Celia and Ralph's

In the jungle, gouache on paper

Here is Venezuela while we visited our friend's place two hours south of Caracas before Chavez came into power. I am glad we got to visit when we did. The country has great beauty but I was somewhat disturbed by the extremes of poverty. There were daily flights of pelicans coming past every evening. Nature was abundant.

In this idyllic time of the year with the weather so beautiful brings to mind how wonderful southern France can be and some of my sketches done there. It is nice to forget about he other news and think on things that are more eternally satisfying.

End of Summer, St. Tropez

These are from a series I painted in late August several years ago in St. Tropez overlooking the Mediterranean in an idyllic setting and perfect for this end of summer when I want to hold onto this perfect moment before all the activity begins again.

Summer in Central Park near the Great Lawn

Here it is mid July exactly, the 15th today. Muggy and humid. Perfect for slowing down.

July afternoon in the park

Small watercolor in sketchbook 5.5 x 8"

I ventured out yesterday with bike and sketchbook in tow and made several sketches in the north end of Central Park on the East side. It was quite comfortable in the shade and there were many beautiful spots with park benches so one could relax.

I really want to get to some more industrial sites but the lure of the park called to me as the loud noise of traffic and hustle bustle made me want to escape to a more peaceful place. I am still rusty with watercolor and want to also look more abstractly and work using nature as an inspiration but then simplify and explore more from imagination rather than have a strictly traditional approach.

This was on roughly 108th Street and Fifth Avenue on the southern end of the lake.

Thursday nude to keep cool

Oil sketch from life, 14 x 17"

I am going out in the park and streets to sketch today, and will start to post based on that work by the weekend. I originally started to post what I was seeing out and about in New York but have decided to post what I actually create while I am out and about looking.

Tape paintings at recent Volta Art Fair

What an inspired booth at Volta recently during Armory Arts Week at the Volta Fair, a juried fair offshoot that I attended for the first time and was glad I did. I enjoyed all three fairs, AADA, Armory and Volta, but after that just didn't have the energy to complete the rounds. I think at this point there is just too much to see and take in for any human being!

This was on a lightbox with simple masking tape. Then an overall theme of 'Rear Window' also completely done in tape on lightboxes, quite original medium, though not sure how long they hold up!
